Planting a Garden
Planting a garden is a great way to use a small, unused area in your yard, but there are many other advantages to gardening that you may be overlooking. If you have been considering planting a garden but wanted to be sure that it was worth your time and energy then here are some ideas and facts that are definitely worth considering.
Saving Money
When you plant even the smallest home garden you are going to save money. Fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs can all be planted in a gardening plot or containers. Growing your own produce at home translates to money in the bank because it is such a cost effective way of providing your family with tasty treats for every meal. Consider the cost of chives, onions, cilantro and other herbs for a moment. Instead of spending several dollars a week going to the grocery store and purchasing these items you can grow them almost all year round and it will cost you only a couple of dollars to get these plants started.
Fresh is Best
No one can argue the point that planting a garden will produce the freshest produce. Why would you want to go the market and pay high prices for foods that are past their prime when you can plant your own favorite veggies and fruits at home and harvest them whenever you choose? The fresh taste of “just picked” produce is welcomed by both adults and kids.
If you have children who are notorious for leaving their vegetables on their plates just try serving them fresh baby carrots, succulent sweet peas or freshly picked ears of corn. Chances are they will clean their plates, veggies and all!
Teaching Moments for Parents and Kids to Share
Planting a garden can easily become a favorite and much anticipated family project. If you are familiar with gardening techniques you can share your knowledge with your kids. Even if you are a beginning gardener you will find that planting a garden can still be a wonderful activity for the entire family.
Learning about the different plants and growing methods is interesting and fun, and little kids welcome any opportunity to dig in the dirt. You can even create outdoor playhouses for them by growing pole beans on tripods constructed from tall stakes. You can keep the fun at a high level by planting unusual seeds such as snake cucumbers, yard long beans, giant strawberries, white pumpkins and rainbow colored radishes and carrots.
When you are planting a garden many people forget that this is a great way to spend time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. You will also be getting a vigorous, free workout that includes lots of bending and stretching which will help keep your body lithe and limber. Your family will be enjoying fresh, organic foods throughout the year and the extra savings can be placed in your bank account each week.
With all of these features for you to consider it seems that planting a garden should be one of your top resolutions for 2010.
